2017 LEN European Diving Championships has been launched at LIKO Arena in Kyiv on June 12, featuring 123 athletes from 23 countries. Sergey Bubka accompanied LEN Vice President Andriy Vlaskov, Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister Vyacheslav Kyrylenko and Diving National Federation’s president Ihor Lysov at the Opening ceremony, saying the event makes history for the country.
Bubka said, ‘Ukraine hosts elite LEN major international championships for the first time ever, opening a new page in the history of sport. The country has huge traditions in diving, winning two medals at the Olympics, as well as 8 World championships medals and more than 100 medals at the Euro championships. Diving is a huge part of nation’s sport history, as Ukraine is proud of more than 600 medals won at the Olympics since its athletes’ inaugural participation in 1952 in Helsinki.
Bubka praised the contribution of Ukraine’s government, Minister of Sport and Youth Ihor Zhdanov, Kyiv city mayor Vitaly Klitchko and NF President who joined their efforts to organize the event. He also thanks LEN who entrusted Kyiv to host it top event in the sport of diving.
Bubka said, ‘2017 is the first year of new Olympic cycle, and Kyiv 2017 will provide wonderful backdrop for the first major event ahead of Tokyo 2010’.
The championship which witnesses the record teams participation, will end up on June 18.
The first final of the championship - team event - brought the first medal for host team, with Oleksandr Horshkovozov and winning silver medal.
