Sergey Bubka, IAAF Vice President, visited Lutsk, Volyn region, Ukraine, to take part in the opening ceremony of Ukraine-Belarus-Turkey U-18 athletics match competition. The event, first international athletics meeting in Ukraine since 2013, was held to inaugurate the renovated ‘Avangard’ Arena in Lutsk.
Highest local authorities and Ukraine Athletics federation’s President Ihor Hotsul, as well as 2003 World Championships’ medalist in 1500 m Ivan Heshko joined Bubka at the opening ceremony of the event. The action was held at the Lutsk major touristic destination – 15th century’s Lubart castle, providing the amazing atmosphere of the medieval city.
Sergey Bubka on behalf of the IAAF also handed the Class 2 Athletics Facility Certificate to ‘Avangard’ Arena which makes it possible to for the venue to host European highest level athletics events.
Bubka, who is one of the highest decorated Ukraine’s athletes and National Olympic Committee President, commented at the event saying, ‘I am absolutely delighted by what I’ve seen here at the venue. ‘Avangard’ meets all the requirements and is 100% ready to host international events. Our country needs as much sport events hosted as possible to involve more kids to sport schools.
I am also happy that ‘Avangard’ is not only up-to-date facility here in the city. I attended Eastern university Arena today, having also a chance to discover and discuss the renovation of training venue in the nearby. My best greetings to local government and sponsors who make their best to provide sport facilities’.
Bubka added, ‘I believe Ukraine will soon be back at the European stage as bidder and host for top athletics events. I will do my best to persuade local authorities all over the country to follow your remarkable example’.
Bubka followed the match competition congratulating host team who has won the event. He also reminded that 12 athletes from Volyn have qualified for Rio 2016 Olympics breaking all time record of Olympic participation for the region.
